STEP 7 - ADDITIONAL TOOLS

7.1 SSEEDIT

To edit Skyrim SE’s game files directly, we need a tool by the name of SSEEdit. It is also commonly referred to as xEdit because it is available for all Bethesda games. This programm allows you to quickly load up, view, and edit hundreds of plugins at once. Entire mods can be created exclusively with xEdit. You can also use it to build your own conflict resolution patches, or clean plugins such as Bethesda’s official master files.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Download SSEEdit manually from the Nexus.
  • Extract the downloaded archive to Your Modding Folder\Tools\SSEEdit.
  • Open Mod Organizer 2 and go into the Executables settings (Tools > Executables or CTRL + E).
  • Click the tiny blue plus icon to add a new executable and select Add from file.
  • Navigate to Your Modding Folder\Tools\SSEEditand double-click SSEEdit.exe.
  • Click Apply to save the new executable.

SSEEDIT CACHE OUTPUT

Every time a new plugin is loaded into SSEEdit, a refcache file will be generated for it so that the next time it won’t have to processed again – SSEEdit can simply read the cache file, significantly shortening the startup time.

In order to store the cached files with the program files themselves, we need to add an argument for it:

  • Under Arguments, enter the following:
    • -C:"...\Your Modding Folder\Tools\SSEEdit\cache\"
  • Replace the “…\Your Modding Folder” part with the file path on your end. This is what I added:
    • -C:"F:\Modding\Skyrim SE Mods\Tools\SSEEdit\cache\"
  • Click Apply to save.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS – QUICKAUTOCLEAN

  • Click the tiny blue plus icon to add another new executable and select Add from file.
  • Navigate to Your Modding Folder\Tools\SSEEditand double-click SSEEditQuickAutoClean.exe.
  • Optional: Change the title to something less verbose (like “SSEEdit – Quick Cleaning”).
  • Click OK to close the window.

7.2 ZEDIT

Developed by mator to be an all-in-one modding solution, zEdit offers similar functionality to xEdit. In addition to that it includes the universal patching framework (UPF) and merging functionality, effectively replacing mator’s Merge Plugins Standalone as well as Reproccers like Patchus Maximus.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Open the Github page for zEdit.
  • Scroll down to the Assets section of the Latest Release.
  • Click on the zEdit archive listed there to download it.
  • Extract the archive to Your Modding Folder\Tools\zEdit.
  • Switch back to Mod Organizer 2 and open the Executables settings (Tools > Exectuables or CTRL + E).
  • Click the tiny blue plus icon to add a new executable and select Add from file.
  • Navigate to Your Modding Folder\Tools\zEditand double-click zEdit.exe.
  • Click OK to close the window.

CONFIGURATION

  • Run zEdit through Mod Organizer 2.
  • Click the gears icon to open the Profile settings.
  • Make sure Path (for Skyrim SE) correctly points to your Skyrim SE root folder.
  • Close the profile settings window.

ZMERGE SETTINGS

  • Select zMerge from the drop-down menu in zEdit and hit Start Session.
  • Click the gears icon in the top right to open the settings.
  • Switch to the Integration Settings tab and apply these settings:
    • Mod manager: Mod Organizer 2
    • MO2 instance: portable
    • Mod manager path: {Your File Path}\Mod Organizer 2
    • Mod manager mods path: {Your File Path}\Mod Organizer 2\mods
  • Switch to the Merge Settings tab:
    • Merge output path: {Your File Path}\Mod Organizer 2\mods
    • Integration: uncheck Disable plugins and Disable mods
  • Once you have made sure everything is configured correctly, you may close zEdit.

7.3 CATHEDRAL ASSET OPTIMIZER (CAO)

A brilliant all-in-one solution for optimising meshes, compressing or resizing textures, and unpacking / repacking archives.

INSTALLATION

  • Download Cathedral Assets Optimizer manually from the Nexus.
  • Open the downloaded archive.
  • Extract all files and folders to Your Modding Folder\Tools\Cathedral Assets Optimizer.

Because you will be using CAO plenty of times during the installation of the guide, I recommend adding it to your Windows Taskbar for quick access.

PROFILES

With the latest versions of CAO, you can set up dedicated profiles to switch between the two primary uses of CAO at will. I created several profiles for different purposes to be used during the installation of the guide.

7.4 SSE NIF OPTIMIZER

Although SSE NIF Optimizer by ousnius was largely replaced by Cathedral Asset Optimizer, it is still relevant for a small amount of mods.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Download SSE NIF Optimizer manually from the Nexus.
  • Extract the executable into Your Modding Folder. It’s just one file (that will generate a matching log file) so no separate folder is necessary.

7.5 MODWAT.CH

Modwat.ch provides the by far easiest way to share your mod list including INIs, load and mod order. If you run into any issues while installing the guide and need our support, you will be asked for your Modwat.ch link. For now we only need to download the application.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Download Modwat.ch manually from the Nexus.
  • Open the downloaded archive.
  • Extract all files and folders to Your Modding Folder\Tools\Modwat.ch.
