STEP 3 - DYNDOLOD

3.1 DYNDOLOD AND PERFORMANCE

Generating dynamic distant LOD comes with a performance cost however it is lower than one might suspect. With “regular” tree LOD and the Low or Medium preset, DynDOLOD will have no noticeable impact on performance even on weaker machines while still drastically improving distant terrain.

Regular tree LOD is essentially tree LOD made the vanilla way, as two-dimensional (flat) “cutouts”. The superior 3D tree LOD (also referred to as “ultra” tree LOD) can only be generated with DynDOLOD but looks significantly better and distant trees will be improved to the point where you can barely tell them apart from fully-rendered trees. This severely reduces pop-in as well.

However, 3D tree LOD also requires a good deal more VRAM which is why it is not recommended for anyone with less than 4GB of VRAM. It can also come with a more noticeable impact on performance in general but that is negligeble on most modern machines and very much worth the visual improvement.

The main guide instructions are written for 3D tree LOD. For those with less than 4GB VRAM or otherwise weaker machines, there are instructions on how to lower DynDOLOD settings in the Customisation section.
